As an only child, I had to find ways to entertain myself. You can only throw a baseball against a wall so many times. Art was another outlet. One of my earliest artistic memories was getting the Saturday morning paper during football season in Athens, Georgia, and trying to copy Jack Davis’ weekly sketch of Harry Dawg “taking care of” that weeks opponent. I would trace the picture until I was comfortable enough with it to try it on my own. Without even knowing it, these were my first lessons in composition and design.
It wasn’t until college that my appreciation for art began to re-develop. Over an idle holiday weekend, I decided on a whim to give painting a try. I took a couple of basic drawing classes as electives, but continued to teach myself through observation and practice. Bob Ross and Thomas Kinkade became my professors. A budding passion for golf eventually led me to the artwork of Linda Hartough. Golf course landscapes are among some of my favorite pieces to attempt. Now, as an avid golfer, I rarely play a course that i don’t envision in oil.
Living in Orlando, Florida, has provided numerous opportunities to visit local beaches regularly. I love to watch people as they experience the beach. From first-timers to the proverbial beach bum, each has a story they are telling. Some stories are more interesting than others. I love trying to imagine the back-stories to the scenes I paint.
Additionally, I sincerely believe that we all have God-given abilities. Humbly, I believe God has given me the ability to create. It is my desire to glorify Him through the use of this gift to the best of my ability.
